After many years of efforts to combine the youth football players from the communities, the AA Team has become a reality for the oldest/heaviest group of Jr. High boys. Now the boys have an opportunity to play at a higher level of competition with more instruction. This provides for better safety and a more fulfilling experience. This football team is made up of mostly 8th grade players and coaches from around the area and practice and compete at the highest level.
The team is coached by a combination of parent and non parent coaches. Coaches are Mark Rice who has coached Winnetka, Glencoe, and Trevian Youth Football for 11 years and played from youth - semi pro levels. Fred Miller who is a 14 year NFL veteran and 4 year youth coach. In 2010 we also have Dana Palmer and John Manchesterwho have coached Wilmette Eagles and Johny Bravo Herndon.
We play a preseason game against Panama. We play in the 8th grade All American Division of the AYF which is the largest and most formidable league locally and nationally. There are ten regular season games - if qualified we then play in the Chicagoland single elimination AYF Playoffs. Champions go to AYF Nationals in Orlando. Another possibility is an end of season tournament.
We have the players list their individual and team goals and track that all season. This is part of our Character Building lessons we send out - selflessness, goal setting, being coachable, facing adversity, humility, teamwork and perseverance to name a few.
We are strong believers in Positive Coaching and adhere to the Positive Coaching Alliance. Through positive, productive and efficient practices we can excel in games. You will not see a lot of screaming at Trevian. At this level it is mostly about fundamentals and we try to get the most out of the boys and build self confidence through hard work and their corresponding accomplishments. We enlist the parents to help as it is a team effort.
In addition to our coaches we have trainers at times help teach football technique by position. Fred Miller (14 year NFL veteran and former Chicago Bear) helps our lineman, Bob Christian (7 year NFL and Northwestern veteran running back) helps with running backs, Jeff Christensen (8 year NFL veteran Quarterback) helps the QBs and receivers, Jamie Moriarty (NFL experience and 2010 US Olympic Bobsled) helps defensive backs, and Tyler Bosch of Athletic Republic in Winnetka helps with speed and agility. These trainers along with our own coaches give the players an unmatched opportunity to learn and excel.
We film every game and use HUDL coaching software to enable the kids and families to watch game at home or any computer. They watch themselves and can make a personal highlight reel. We use online tools to illustrate and teach. High Schools, Colleges, and NFL teams use it. We want the kids to view the game footage and lessons we add to the video, and we track who is watching and for how long. It is a great tool and we must spend the time to watch it to get better. – www.hudl.com
The games are broadcast on Comcast Cable TV on Saturdays during the season.
We have sponsors for the program and are able to provide scholarships where there is need. We have never had a boy not play due to finances. To register go to the registration page and follow the instructions.
We had three 8th graders each receive $1,200 from AYF for scholastic achievement - it is grades based. We go to great lengths each year to honor the boys for that special achievement.
The boys do 20 pushups and sit ups each day to build strength and confidence. We are champions on the field AND at school and mealtime by eating healthy, proper nutrition, and strong character. Substitute water for soda and fruits/vegetables for french fries. Get plenty of sleep and practice being a role model. We will be healthy, strong, fast, get better at football each day, and be winners in life for themselves and their teammates who rely on them.
For 2010 the AA team was full and we had to turn players away. The team is a nice mixture of boys from Wilmette, Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, Glencoe and elsewhere. We do not have try outs and are first come first served. Please register early for 2011 as we again plan to have only one team.
